Frequently Asked Questions

What happens at your monthly meet ups?  How do I get tickets?

We will meet monthly on the 4th Tuesday of each month from 6:00-9:00 PM.  Tickets do not need to be purchased in advance. You can pay when you arrive (cash only please).   From 6:00 to 7:00 there will be beginning Lindy/swing 101 lesson led by our very own amazing Alison Harper.    From 7:00-9:00 there will be a social dance to a DJ or live music.

Do I need to bring a dance partner or have previous dance experience?

Definitely not!  You can come alone or bring friends and partners along.   During the lesson we’ll rotate partners and we invite you to ask anyone to dance during the social dance.   Our culture is welcoming and inclusive of dancers of all levels and all ages.

Where are you located and where can I park?

There is street parking and a public parking lot at the end of Spring street, across from the National Hotel.  There are also two sizeable public parking lots on the other side of Broad Street  (5 mins walking distance) see link to map:  downtown.ai

What should I wear?

We recommend wearing clothes you are comfortable moving around in.  Casual attire is fine, though some folks like to dress up and that is ok too.  Close toed shoes are highly recommended, especially shoes with low traction – eg shoes with leather or suede bottoms.  Please, no sharp heels or sticky rubber bottoms that may leave marks on the floor. We recommend purchasing ‘dance socks’ that you can put over your shoes, to avoid scuffing the floor and also to ensure appropriate ‘slip’ and protect your knees.

What is swing dance?

"Swing Dance" is an umbrella term for Lindy Hop, Charleston, Balboa, Shag, and more, many of which are danced weekly at Nevada County Swings!   Lindy Hop, the primary style of dancing at Jazz Attack, has its roots in 1920s in Harlem, NYC among primarily Black communities. It evolved with jazz music and became popular across the country through radio broadcasts, film, and live performance. Lindy hop history, jazz history, and African-American history are inseparable topics, and all attendees are encouraged to engage deeply with these subjects to gain a fuller understanding of this tradition that is still kicking 100 years later (Source:  Jazz Dance History & Culture | Philadelphia | Jazz Attack)
